Sullivan County Tanning Industry
The D&H Canal made the Sullivan County Tanning Industry Possible
“By the 1830s Sullivan County tanners and those in the southeastern part of the Hardenbergh Patent had a decided advantage over those elsewhere in the Catskills, for ever since 1828 they had been able to ship their hides and the ground tanbark … over the Delaware and Hudson Canal.”
So wrote Alf Evers in his history “From Wilderness to Woodstock.” Nancy Bachana will detail how the canal became the engine of change for Sullivan, carrying passengers as well as cargo, and creating communities that thrived near the water highway.

World Canals Conference
Nancy will contribute to a featured lecture titled “Canals in Popular Culture”
